Nuno Bettencourt’s Cover of Radiohead’s Creep is about the best thing you’ll ever hear

Let me explain to you why.

This man, Nuno Bettencourt, is the most beautiful soul you’ll ever see walk this Earth. He is not only a true idealist, an incredible musician, clearly a superbly intelligent guy, he’s as handsome as men come, and this song is what he chose to tear one’s heart out. “Every now and again a song comes out that fucks with you…” he begins his intro. Something about this song speaks to a man that is the closest thing a man comes to a god… In that song, the lyrics go: “And I wish I was special / you’re so fuckin’ special / But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo. / What the hell am I doing here? / I don’t belong here. / I don’t care if it hurts / I want to have control / I want a perfect body / I want a perfect soul…”

Holy FUCK.

The pain is real. The NEED TO BE BETTER STILL is real. The dissatisfaction in oneself, although I am sure he’s proud of himself, too, the dissatisfaction is real. And there is no one more special than him.

I didn’t like the original version of the song, as it felt to me Radiohead didn’t really understand the song (they didn’t write it themselves, although they had an influence in it), and I am THANKFUL beyond words Bettencourt picked this song to cover it (and I hope he’ll make an actual recording of it one day and some other covers he’s done, but this especially) and truly bring it out. The way Radiohead brought it out was an attack on the woman in the song, her pretentiousness, shallowness, and her materialism, they sang it as if it was sarcastic, but Bettencourt brings in an entirely different tonality. I love this song so much it’s the first video YouTube suggests for me every time I log on. “Hey, you haven’t listened to Creep for about an hour, how about it?”

Thank God his brothers made him play the guitar instead of made him sing because, with a voice like that, he would have never needed to learn to play an instrument, either. We would have lost one of the world’s best guitar players if his brothers weren’t needing a guitarist over a singer.

Here, have a listen:

When you were here before
Couldn’t look you in the eye
You’re just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry

You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
And I wish I was special
You’re so fuckin’ special

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here.

I don’t care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul

I want you to notice
When I’m not around
You’re so fuckin’ special
I wish I was special

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here.

She’s running out again,
She’s running out
She’s run run run run

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You’re so fuckin’ special
I wish I was special

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo,
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here.
I don’t belong here.

Clicking on that image will get you to Phantom Blue, the only all-girl band that I know is worth listening to. (Creep on that list is more a standard than an accident, the rest are from the loved videos archives in no particular order. :p)

I said

The reason you believe that twin souls cannot incarnate together but once in history is because it gives you a reason to be smug about having found yours. And that probably means you are not quite as advanced as you think you are.
