8, 5, and 9 Clues to know what is authentic for you and what is not – Authenticity is individual, not organic porridge

Me in my authentic state in 2001; just one of the things I enjoy doing.

Authenticity is the state of being that you would assume if you felt no external pressure to be something different. Here are som tips on how to discover what is authentic and is not authentic in your life and for you:

Signs of you being in an inauthentic state:

  1. You feel you need to pretend to be concerned or to care about something, someone, or an issue.
  2. You feel you are pretending to enjoy this.
  3. You feel like you are pretending to have fun.
  4. You pretend this is enough for you.
  5. You pretend this is not too much for you.
  6. You pretend that you do not notice something.
  7. You feel obstructed, limited, chained down, or jailed.
  8. You feel smug about being “better” than others, you feel you have made a sacrifice on behalf of other people and that makes you better (more mature, selfless, or evolved) than them.

Signs of your authentic state is present in someone else:

  1. You feel angry at people who have it; you feel like they are being selfish for taking what “everyone” wants, even though you feel that is “forbidden”. (Ie. those bastards who choose not to have children!!) If you feel that way about someone, your authentic state would be the same as they are.
  2. You are envious of them. We always envy those who “get to” live the way our authentic self would love to live.
  3. You find yourself thinking that if there is another life, good karma has been given to them and bad karma is given to you, and that explains the reason why you live like this and they live like that.
  4. You deny wanting it or needing it because you feel it would be selfish, self-indulgent, “too much” or “too good” to have.
  5. You feel they are being incredibly lucky and that their luck is “unfair”.

Signs of your authentic self being present in you:

  1. You feel genuinely lucky to be who you are, privileged to be where you are at.
  2. You feel a little sorry for everyone who doesn’t get to live like you.
  3. Periodically you may feel like you want to give up your way of life because others are not as lucky as you are and you feel you too need to live unhappy life as if it would make things better for others.
  4. You truly enjoy doing what you are doing.
  5. You feel proud to be doing what you are doing and you feel proud of your achievements.
  6. You feel positively challenged and excited to rise to the challenges.
  7. You feel any disruption to your life would be an offence to who you are.
  8. You feel a pull towards your future that you do not want to change or avoid, but are going towards it happily and with anticipation.
  9. You feel you want to help others to achieve this same state of happiness and freedom to be themselves. (Be careful not to mistake your authentic state to that of theirs. The biggest and the most common spiritual mistake is to believe everyone will find happiness the same way.)

Bonus: Authenticity and how others perceive your intentions

Even when we speak from our authentic self, being who we are, we might speak from the place of love and care, but the way others will hear it is entirely dependent on their own… level of suspicion of others. If they feel continually judged, even the fact that you are not the same as they are may come off to them as if you were being judgmental of their choices. To a lot of people, a person who is freely different than others may seem to be critical and judgmental of others simply by their own choices being different, or being “flawed” or “skewed” because they are not like everyone else (them being authentically critical of you because you are not like them, and because this is the way they feel, they feel you would feel the same way about them). Bear this in mind, and try to deal with it, because whatever it is worth, you being different should not be seen as an insult to sameness.

I hope these tips will help you get closer to who you truly are, and shed some inauthentic habits, beliefs, and even relationships out of your life.
