Why do people work so hard on their own business, don’t they have enough money yet?

They say “an overnight success takes on average 10 years of devoted, hard work (without pay)”… Sometimes it takes more than that. The irony is in what seems to others like an overnight success, to the person achieving it, it’s been years of grueling work without looking at the watch while working. Whether it is learning to play an instrument from age 4 onward, or developing a new business idea from the ground up to a marketable form, it will take years, maybe decades, not months let alone weeks to get done.

So no. They literally do not have enough money yet to hire help, let alone stop working. Business owners who are actually built for success cannot be motivated by the notion of a quick buck or a fast payday… Or at least they can’t give up when those things don’t come to them, even if that’s what they were hoping for.

Is it OK to be offended by their focus on their business rather than you? Sure, be offended if you like, but what does that change? You know where you stand in their priorities – if you’ve actually OFFERED your company, that is. If you’re waiting until they’re done working, you’ll wait for the rest of your life, dear. A person building their business is not going to go looking for a break very often, but they might still be grateful if one was offered. They may well be waiting for something worth taking a break for, rather than mindlessly roaming pubs in the hopes something good will happen. So if you’re interested, ask them if they could squeeze in a break, rather than wait for them to stop for no reason. Be a reason for them to stop working (for an evening here and there) rather than wait for them to be finished – it’s unlikely they will ever feel “finished”… at least in the positive sense of the word… And if they’ll find themselves finished in the negative sense; failed, that is, the last thing they need is a fucking relationship. They won’t be in the mood for it, trust me.
