Honey, thinking about your child as your “forever baby” will not help him or her along.
Back in the day, people raised adults. Boys of 12 years of age were just about men. Girls were nearly women at 10. While that isn’t exactly where we should be returning, it’s time to recorrect our view somewhere where it’s sensible. I’m sure you’ve noticed something along these lines; kids seem to be unable to get things done the same way as they used to. This is not the children’s fault, it’s parenting and the general culture of molly-coddling them too much. You know it’s not right by them, and it’s also not right by you – you deserve to enjoy your life after raising children – you’re not dead yet, but you keep parenting children in their 30s!
This idea of “forever babies” is not good for either the child or the adult. Living in a weakened state as an adult is not a good way of being. And a lot of it comes from the general idea that you should be there, picking them up whenever they fall, and more than that, protect them from all chances of falling, all risks that might come to them, all potential downfalls. No. You need to let them fall. Make their own mistakes. You have to let them think for themselves. You need to let them learn and become independent from you. That may feel scary, but you know they can always turn to you if they fall, but you’ll have to let them fall every now and then. Warn them, sure, then let them make the mistake of not listening to you. If you are wise, teach them it’s not wise to not listen to you; rather than stop them from ever coming to that conclusion by experience.
And… Maybe…
Just maybe… They know better than you, after all.
S***, right?
