When people say it’s “too try-hard” they mean the “trying” is still visible, and the creator didn’t try hard enough.
You know… When people say something is “a bit try-hard” it truly is a sign that the creator hasn’t actually put in the effort needed to make it seem effortless. As they say: “overnight success takes 10 years of dedicated hard work.” Stuff that doesn’t seem “try-hard” is actually stuff that is so well-honed, so well-thought-out, that the “trying” has gotten invisible. It is a bit of a mistake to think that talented people don’t need to work on their craft. Take Steven Tyler, for example. His bandmates may complain about the time he takes to write lyrics, but they come out perfect.
Don’t stop yourself from polishing things up. Just keep making it better. Little by little.
Just a little bit better still.
That’s what winners do.
Losers go with “eeeeh, good enough.” It isn’t. If you CAN improve it still, if you can still SEE a flaw yourself, it is not good enough.
It’s good enough when YOU, as the expert, the creator, the talent, cannot see a flaw you are able to fix at your highest skill level, even if 99% of people wouldn’t have a clue.
Otherwise… You’ll be mediocre, and that’s all fine and dandy if that’s all you wish to be.
