The Court Of Public Opinion – how about we make it official, hey?
So, let’s imagine you’re a high-level celebrity at the top of your career and popularity, and you decide to enjoy yourself in the privacy of your backyard by, say, masturbating in the Sun. A reporter flies a drone over your property and catches you in the act. Swiftly they post it on social media saying they “caught you” masturbating in your backyard. So, unphased, you go on social media and say: “What are you doing ‘catching people’ in the privacy of their own home, exactly?” To your fans, you point out: “I’m sure you have masturbated from time to time at home yourselves? If not, you should give it a go; watch your windows and air space because there are peeping toms around.”
Which side do you think the public will take? Does it MATTER if drones are legal or illegal? What MATTERS is what is right? What does the judge’s word mean if the public knows the ruling is blatantly wrong or unfair?
And it is damned site cheaper these days to sway the entire world’s opinion than persuade a single bribed judge anyway.
Public opinion will divide people.
As the court of public opinion will deliberate, the crowd will split. And you will know exactly who your friends are. Not entirely a bad result. You get who you deserve. If you lie, cheat, steal, pry on others, bait others, take advantage of others, you get the crowd that approves. Good on you! You got who you deserve. If, on the other hand, you can sway the audience to your corner with stand-up reasoning, YOUR value system, YOUR moral code, you’ve got again… The people you deserve—the people who would hold themselves to the same standards that fit you, too.
At the end of the debate, you’ll be standing with YOUR FRIENDS, and you didn’t spend millions of dollars to do it.
