A narcissists imagined fears feel real to them. They have trouble differentiating imagination from knowledge or reality.
Narcissism is the function of living a life of play pretend, living in one’s imagination and fantasies. They can’t tell a difference between reality and fantasy on a good day, and they cannot tell the difference on a bad day, either. Whatever they imagine is potentially their reality. Whether they imagine you love them more than anybody else or that you’ve had a secret baby with the older woman next door, it doesn’t really make a difference – but their reaction to your imagined feelings and deeds does make a difference.
