How to answer a fan asking after a release that is already late?
I’ve been asked to answer this question, as to what to tell a fan who catches you in person (at a fan meeting may be) and wants to know when something you know is badly delayed is going to be released. You may feel guilty for making them wait, but in truth, the only thing they want to do here is to make sure YOU know that your work is appreciated and anticipated, and to hear it is actually coming rather than gotten canceled for whatever reason.
Therefore, the vague: “oh it’s coming, it’s coming, you know it’s a hassle” is fine. Everything you do, to a fan, is wonderful, mysterious, and magical. All they want to know is that the thing is going to happen sooner or later. Just tell them what you can say, giving specific dates is not necessary, just say it’s REALLY on its way, (if it is), and that the papers aren’t promising something that isn’t even in the works anymore, as sometimes they print outdated information.
A fan is interested in anything that is going on with you. Writer’s block, to a fan, is fascinating artist stuff. Your fans are not your friends – they’re actually genuinely interested. 😉 Therefore, you can tell them even the bad news if you like, although that’s likely to wind up onto the internet if you do… Maybe in some cases, you want it to.
