A narcissist is more than happy to lie to themselves on your behalf.

A narcissist wants to imagine their world is perfect. They don’t seem to care that it isn’t; they’ll make believe that no matter how much you seem to hate them, you’d have their back in a pinch and that sort of thing. They can often turn an insult into a compliment and a friendly razz into an insult, whichever way flatters their ego and works in their imaginary life narrative. Their idea of reality is very much based on their own imagination.

Therefore, all you need to do is to give them a reason to want to believe one thing or another. Then, just a tiny push to make them think about it and let them fill in the blanks.

I’m not entirely sure how well it can be predicted what they will imagine, but they will probably imagine something. 😀 You maybe able to predict it better, but it will always make them look good. So if you give even a hint to them about what would be admirable and enviable, and then offer them an opportunity to pretend to be it, they’ll likely bite.
