Being who you are (not) – being (in)authentic

I often use the phrase “to be who you are (not)”. There are people who understand this phrase differently to how I mean it. There are two possible interpretations:

1. Who I am told to be, who I was born to be by my parents’ example and wish. (Role)
2. Who I feel I am, what I enjoy doing and being. What I feel the need to be free to be (and do). (Inner drive)

I mean it in the meaning 2.

Being who you are

Type 1 tends NOT TO like/understand the thought of an authentic being too well. They may have a very uncertain idea who that is, as their thrive toward being admired by others is always in the way of them discovering who they truly are. They change who they appear to be per popular opinion.

HOW WOULD YOU know who are if you’ve only ever been who you’ve told to be? Type 1 also believes they are who they are told and taught to be. They may also feel BLOCKED from being who they were meant to be if their parent refuses to give them guidance as to how to follow in their footsteps.

Being who you are not

Trying to be something you are not feels uncomfortable. Regardless of where you were born and raised, you may feel completely out of place in your own family. Regardless of where you went to school and grew up, nothing to do with your authentic self – the person who you are. If you fit in where you were born and raised, great, you are one of the lucky ones, then, you don’t feel like you have to pretend all the time just to fit in.

If you feel like you have to pretend a lot or cover up your true inner self, that’s when you know you are not truly who you are pretending to be, and you are in the wrong group of people (karmic soulmates).

You may not know yourself yet

It is perfectly normal to not know who you are or even who you wish to be. That simply means you haven’t tried it yet. You just don’t know yet. The remedy is to try a lot of different things – as long as it’s legal.
