If they’re a friend, underestimate them, if they’re an enemy, overestimate them.

It’s difficult to know exactly how stupid or smart someone is without knowing them better. By default, it’s good to underestimate a (potential) friend’s intelligence so you can help them to be better rather than to allow them to get hurt and potentially hurt you, too, by sheer stupidity or inexperience.

If they’re an enemy, overestimating their intelligence and cunning is a better idea. Counting on your enemy’s stupidity is stupidity of the finest order, truly.
