“Kids” don’t need to be spanked, the Modern -type of kids may need to be, however.

There are two types of people in this world, and these types are in-born. Savant* kids do not need to be spanked – they know, deep down, it is possible they are not loved and that their parents may even hate them, so they are not going to be testing their boundaries too much. Shouting at a Timeless kid is not necessary, let alone spanking or beating them. Any form of violence shown to a Timeless is going to convince them that they are in the wrong house, with the wrong people who hate them, NOT that they need to behave better.

However, the Modern child thinks differently. They believe their parents love them unconditionally. They have blind trust in people around them, they ask no questions, and they definitely do not consider the possibility that mom or dad might not love them if they are angry at them. Quite the opposite, the milder and gentler their parents are, the more they’re questioning their conviction: “Do they care? Do they know what they’re doing? Am I even safe with people that soft?!” If they cannot beat up a mere child, what will happen if a monster comes around?!

And the more they fear, the more they act up, trying to find proof that you’re not going to let the bear get them if one strolls by… Or that you’re not going to allow them to hurt themselves OR their reputation if they just run wild like an animal. If you show no ability to hold boundaries secure, they’ll find someone who does.

The problem:

Too much discipline will send the Timeless packing: by 16, they’re out doing drugs under a bridge or pimping or selling drugs for a cartel (with a good prospect of running a drug cartel themselves by 21).

Too little discipline will send the Modern packing: by 16, they’re out doing drugs under a bridge or pimping or selling drugs for a cartel.

Moderate discipline will work OK for both, but there are still problems if you fail to adapt to the child’s basic thinker type.
