Part 9: You don’t have to do s***.
OK. THEY will kill me for this.
This is something that I have struggled to trust myself. You don’t have to do jack s*** to make your goal. That doesn’t mean that you have to sit passively doing nothing, it simply means that when you do something, do something that feels right and inspiring. If you have to force yourself to do it, it is probably not going to work for you too well. (Get yourself an accountant. 😀 They love those numbers.)
There are more than a few benefits for this approach. If you do not hurry too much and seem to always be playing, people who have an issue with your success won’t be spiritually alerted that you are on the move, and they won’t be putting up barriers for you. Simply whisper to your friends and your ideal customers instead… Once you’re ready.
I’ve personally been in a hurry to make it for 15 years. I’ve spent a lot of energy creating opposition and going nowhere, because I’ve always been overly ambitious. The reason why so many people succeed right after giving up, people who have been against them have relaxed and went… “well, he gave up. Good. We can go home.” It is really difficult to fight someone who doesn’t seem to be moving anymore.
The other reason why your opponents will be silenced through this is because they feel you have been “humbled”. Imagine moving on stealth mode, lights out, slow, through dark streets. The less attention you gather at this stage, the better. When it’s time to turn on the lights and hit the pedal, do that, before that, keep your head down.
(If this plan irks you, don’t take my advice on it, I don’t know if I could have done, I love a good fight. :D)
Try this however. When you feel the most anxious about having done nothing productive for ages (like 2 hours right?) calm yourself with this thought: “I don’t have to do anything.” You could just lie there for the rest of your life without any attempt to lift your finger. You could just try spitting on the roof if you like. Become a champion in trash bin meets rolled paper -basketball. You DON’T HAVE TO do anything.
What do you want to do next?
It’s going to be something related to your plan, I guess, if it’s not, maybe you should pay attention to what it is that you do want to do and see if that would be closer to your authentic business plan instead.
Every time you hit the “you should” block, do this, and make a note of what it is that you’d do instead if you could, or what it is that you’d do next with your business if you put aside the shoulds. It’s better you do something fun about it than do nothing, right?
(This should also work for creative blocks caused by fans who are hanging onto your next album so excited that you can’t move.)
