The concept of “true self” or “true you” in the light of other teachings
The one pet peeve of mine about a lot of spiritual people is their insistence “the true self” is something external to them, something “better” than them. This is RIFE with misinterpretation.
A lot of spiritual people regard “the true self” to be some angelic pure being. This is because God has been trying to tell people world over they need not pretend as in their authentic self they ARE perfect. Because people rarely can think of themselves in the terms of “perfect” they over-complicate what god must have meant.
He doesn’t mean you have to change into an angelic person, but that you already are perfect. You just need to accept you for you.
Do not put on any airs
Imagine someone who you know doesn’t pretend for anybody. Who doesn’t kiss ass, mind their manners or put on any airs? THAT is what I mean by “your true self”. Nothing more complicated than that.
No self-denial, no self-deluding, no pretense, no keeping up with the Joneses, not pretending to be less than what you are, more modest, or more accepting, more loving or caring, just you…
The true you is found on the inside, by asking questions of “how do I feel, what do I want, what do I enjoy”, not “what do I think my higher self would enjoy?” Don’t over-complicate this, you’ll wind up hanging yourself!
You are not looking for a role model of who you SHOULD be. You are looking to answer WHAT ARE YOU?
