There is no such thing as unconditional love.

Love is ALWAYS conditional. Always. Always. Always. When it’s your child, the conditions are lower than when it’s someone else’s (adult) child in question. The conditions may be: “As long as you’re beautiful, successful, wealthy…” or “as long as you remain pathetic, pitiful, ugly, and needy freak.” Now, the question you need to answer is this: What do you want to be loved for? What are you ready and willing to be or become PERMANENTLY that will get you EVER LASTING LOVE under conditions that you are more than willing and capable of fulfilling?

To be yourself, yes. What is yourself? You are the person you wish to learn to be permanently. Forever, even. That is who you are.

Find a way to be it.

“I’ll love you as long as you’re pathetic.” What’s wrong with that?

People who love you FOR your weakness will leave you the moment you start gaining strength. Whether they “love you” as in feel sorry for you or pity you, feel like you need first aid or love you for your weakness because they find it cute and endearing, they’ll leave you when you gain strength. You’re no longer pathetic, no longer lovable.

Therefore, you need to find a way to be what you enjoy being for the sake of being it. So you love being yourself regardless of whether anybody loves you for it or not. THEN, you’ll find TRUE LOVE, even if it is not unconditional. Those two things are not the same thing.
