Time for a Reality Check? How do you know?

I came up with a new way to express things the other day, and I am going to share it with you now:

“If every reading you get from your meter is one and the same, you know your meter is very likely broken.”

It seems to me, that there are people who have meters who only measure a VERY narrow field of possible answers to begin with. It is as though they’d had a temperature meter that only allows the quicksilver to rise to +37 ‘C and sink to +36.5’C (the normal body temperature) to ensure everyone stays healthy. Obviously, if you measure temperature with a gadget that only ever reads “normal body temperature”, while ignoring the real signs of sweating, feeling hot and cold, and other signs of running a fever, but you insist what the reading in  your thermometer is is real, you KNOW you are going to run into trouble, right?

Do not decide on the answer before you have actually observed the reality around you!

The best meters are those who are configured to test even the kinds of temperatures that SHOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE, right? Because what if they are? What if the temperature sinks so low, or hikes so high, that it wasn’t supposed to be possible? The temperature is still going to be that high, whether you thought it possible or not, but you still rely on your thermometer to tell you the absolute truth, right? And that’s where you’re going to get lost.

So. How to tune YOURSELF to the possibility of the impossible, or the unpleasant answer; “not everything is as you wish it was”. Also, you have to tune yourself to the possibility that everything is BETTER than what you ever dream to be possible if you could only open yourself up to receiving that information. Now, the trick here is to NOT get unrealistic, and decide you’ll only expand to see more positive options and keep the options of unpleasantness out of your sensory field, but that you allow both possibilities to enter your reality.

We are usually prone to some level of tweaking and self-deception when we prepare our emotional thermometers to receive information. Some of us ignore the fact tons and tons of people fall in love with them left right and center because we don’t want the responsibility of their feelings or their happiness. Some fear that that kind of readings are a sing of a faulty measuring gadget that always shows high emotions from other people, even though it shouldn’t be possible, so they adjust the lever to show less of those high emotions and more of the low, just to normalize the readings artificially. Some do the opposite because they don’t want to feel unwanted or unloved on a regular basis. If you already know which direction you’re tweaking your sensory systems, stop freaking doing it! Just allow the truth in. All you need to see is the reality. That’s all. It’s already there, the reality is what it is, your sensory system is not going to alter it, only your perception of it changes. It is like looking at the world through a camera lens. What you leave out of it is still there, you’re just not looking at it, you’re not aware of it and you convince yourself that everything you see through the lens is all there is to your world. That is not true, but it is easy to convince oneself of such a reality, and then call it a fancy word like “positive thinking” or “optimizing” when in reality, it is only self-delusion, denial, and avoidance of reality.

If you keep tweaking the results of your observation, you are also going to put yourself in the harm’s way. Imagine crossing the road while looking through a camera lens. How safe do you feel? If you feel safe doing that, there is a high chance you’re going to get hit by a truck that you didn’t see coming nor did you expect it to come. If this is the way you live your life, you don’t know what’s going to hit you, nor are you likely to be willing to check what was it that hit you when it did. That creates constant uncertainty and fear, that you are likely trying to combat with more self-deception than before.

Put the lense down, look around. See with all of your faculties and don’t kid yourself.

What does it look like?
