What motivates nasty comments online?

We’ve all seen it. Someone rises in the rans and soon you see a bunch of bottomfeeders making nasty comments about the person gaining popularity. “Oh, that is a really nice dress, huh? Please!” These comments rarely offer any real insight, but simply slander the opinion or person with no real teeth. Just using a “nasty tone” to point out a “supposedly obvious” flaw or “idiocy” of the person talking.

The purpose, I suppose, is to thaw the person’s rise in status. To make it more dangerous to defend the person, given that anyone who would, doesn’t want to turn the mob toward them. Considering how eager some people are to pick a fight, one only assumes they’re more than happy to fight any smaller fish coming to the aid of the big one.

How many of you actually like Donald Trump? The democrats have been using shaming-campaigning effectively for years, and certainly ramped it up during Trump campaigning and term to a great effect. The reason why he won was not that he rigged the election. The reason is that Democrats shamed his supporters into silence, and they went to the ballots without hissing a word about it to anybody. Although they liked Trump, it wasn’t worth committing a career and social suicide over.

And that’s how prominent people remain without public support, get burned out, and quit.

Shame-turning other people away from the prominent person by making it sound silly or stupid to support them works wonders.
