What not to Say on Social Media

Common social media mistakes

The Old Souls* may take to social media to instruct their fans on how to behave. (Justin, this is you!) They do this because they would never want to correct any specific person directly because that would be too direct and too confronting, but they approach the entire fan base thinking that the people who should take heed should know who they are and adjust their behavior. They would also only ever do this because they experienced some TRULY rude behavior that they don’t want to be exposed to again, and they believe everyone in their following understands that this is what happened and that they wouldn’t react to it otherwise. To correct this: Name names, or name specific times and places, or describe the situation really carefully, or don’t bring it up at all. Otherwise, you’ll insult everyone and make the rest really careful about how to be around you because they don’t know HOW BAD it actually was! A moan about this particular experience is much  more effective than trying to instruct people on their behavior… Nobody wants to be the moron, but even more people are not happy being told how to behave towards  you – they don’t want to let you think that you are controlling their behavior when they act appropriately, but they want you to know that they’d do that anyway…

The Young Soul* try to over-emphasise their energy levels, how hard they exercise, how they drink their water, how often they go out to meet friends… Both the Young Soul* AND the Old Souls* hate this, and the ones who don’t seem to think that it is a competition, it doesn’t endear them to you, but they simply start competing with you, and nobody wins. Only professional athletes are exempt from over-emphasising their daily routines like this, everyone else; shut up! If it isn’t directly related to  your profession that everyone knows you are an over-achiever in, do not emphasize what a good boy or a good girl you are doing all of this stuff on a regular basis. Everyone will hate you for reminding them what they SHOULD BE doing instead of enjoying their social media at this very moment.

The Old Souls* try to emphasise their level of professionalism, particularly when starting out. That makes them seem cold and inaccessible. They never mention anything but stuff that is related to their business or profession, and the purpose of social media is often lost with them. They also try not to “bore” their fans with too much personal stuff, but the reality is that nobody follows you on social media unless they are actually interested in you, and if you lose a follower who followed you just because, there’s no harm done if they don’t want to know what you ate for breakfast (honestly). Even the Old Souls* love this level of getting to know you, simply because that makes them feel like they’re right there with you – not because they want to know what you’re eating so they could eat the same way (like the Young Soul* think), but because their imagination takes them with you to the breakfast table and they feel closer to you or your way of life in that way.

The Old Souls* can, also, sometimes seem too smart to approach. They are so professional, that others don’t dare to talk to them, at all, and again, social media goes wrong for them. Therefore, the Young Soul* Social approach will work, tell people when  you’re tired – there’ll be tons of other people tired at the same time – report waiting for the waitress and being hungry, and be nice; I’ve been waiting for my food for 5 minutes, I know this place and every second that goes past is like an eternity, LOVE their food! But refrain from writing a Nuno Bettencourt -style description of the beautiful bird (pigeon) outside the window if you’re looking for reactions… Although we all love his romantic ramblings, us fans, we can’t compete and replying would feel stupid! His updates about his dog Koa, however, are both hilarious, smart, heartfelt, and also, very relatable for fellow dog owners… (He could answer his fans on an occasion, though. Case study!)
