When you’re picking your sexual identity, imagine you’re reading a menu.
Sometimes, there’s a pressure to “choose the right way of being” as per what is in and what is out, what gives you acceptance and approval, a sense of belonging rather than what actually is authentic for you. For the purpose of Free Spirit Theory, what is important is the authentic way of being, not what gives you social clout. This is why, when you’re picking your sexual (rather than gender) identity, imagine you’re at a restaurant; you can have anything you want off the menu, everything is equal in healthiness, the price is the same, all you can eat, but you can only have one dish. (If you can’t choose, then maybe a new dish needs to be created just for you. – Why can’t you choose? Is there a configuration, an option we didn’t think about?)
Sure, there may be some vageterians who will judge you for ordering a good plate of meaty sausages (get it? 😉 ) but from the chef’s and staff’s perspective, everything is a joy to create for you. A classic is a classic, but it’s refreshing when people order something unusual.
If this is still difficult; imagine nobody has ever told you what you should choose, they’re not here, and they won’t find out; what would you choose?
