Why do people rely on smart people when they don’t want to hear the truth?
It is an interesting skill to fool oneself into believing everything is fine and one’s doing great. One method of self-delusion is to go to a person who is known to be smart with pre-held instructions on what to tell you. When the smart, trusted person picks up on your intent and tells you what you want to hear, you feel twice as reaffirmed in your delusion.
Don’t be used this way if you are smart and want to help someone. Tell that person the truth or refuse to answer altogether. Don’t let them use your intelligence and soft-heart to drive themselves further down a dark path to self-delusion.
